Sitting Lion Garden Statue

This is a sitting lion garden statue in Baltimore. It is a replica of the sitting lion in 1846 created by Barye in 1885. It stands in the Dueley Garden in Paris, France. At that time, Barye’s sitting lion was considered the most unusual, because most of the lions were portrayed as fierce beasts, often depicted as roaring. It is depicted as squatting on the ground, squatting upright and looking at the distance. It seems to pass through the garden, through the city, and into the natural life of longevity. At the bottom of the lion, it has Bayer’s birth and death dates. If you look carefully, there are bronze reliefs of lions walking on both sides of the base.
