Who Is KAWS?
KAWS, the professional name of American artist and designer Brian Donnelly, is known for combining contemporary art, popular culture, and commercial design. His recurring characters, especially Companion, have appeared across paintings, figures, and large-scale sculptures.
Based in Brooklyn for much of his career, KAWS has developed a visual language that can be recognized through simplified forms, expressive poses, and the distinctive “XX” motif. His sculptures have been presented in galleries, museums, public spaces, and major art exhibitions around the world.
Kaws’ influences come from traditional high art painters like Gerhard Richter, Claes Oldenburg, and Chuck Close,[4] and he has compared to the likes of Andy Warhol for his cross-market appeal and ability to blur lines between commercial and fine art. His work exhibited in galleries and museums, held in the permanent collections of public institutions, and avidly collected by individuals including music producer Swizz Beatz, internet figure PewDiePie, rappers Pharrell Williams, Kid Cudi, and members of South Korean group BTS. A number of books illustrating his work have been published.
Kaws lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, creating sculptures, acrylic paintings on canvas, and screen prints while also collaborating commercially, predominantly on limited edition toys, but also clothing, skateboard decks, and other products. KAWS represented by Skarstedt Gallery, New York.

Now admired for his larger-than-life sculptures and hard-edge paintings that emphasize line and color, KAWS has created a cast of hybrid cartoon and human characters that are perhaps the strongest examples of his exploration of humanity. KAWS has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally. Recent solo exhibitions of his work have held at institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum. The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The Yuz Museum; Yorkshire Sculpture Park; and the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga. He has also participated in exhibitions at major institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; the Newcomb Art Museum; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Deste Art Foundation for Contemporary Art.
Large-Scale KAWS Sculptures
KAWS is widely recognized for transforming his familiar characters into large-scale sculptures that can be experienced beyond the scale of collectible figures. Enlarged Companion figures create a different visual relationship with viewers and are often used in exhibitions, galleries, commercial environments, and public art settings.
